10. 24

Directed by Vikram k. Kumar, 24 was one of the best Sci-fi movies of 2016.

Sethuraman (Suriya) invents the time machine, which leads to a bitter battle between his evil twin brother Athreya (Suriya) and his son Mani (Suriya).

9. Aandavan Kattalai

Director Manikandan's meaningful entertainer Aandavan Kattalai is a pleasant surprise from this year.

Gandhi (Vijay Sethupathi) and Pandi decided to get a passport and travel to London to get rid of debts in their village. Things didn't happen has they planned.

8. Kabali

Directed by Paa Renjith, Kabali portrayed Super Star Rajinikanth in a new avatar and mannerisms.

Before Indian Independence, many Tamils from South India were sent to Malaysia as indentured laborers. Kabali(Rajinikanth), fights this oppression. After a lengthy imprisonment, he is more determined than ever to fight for his people.

7. Ammani

Directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, one of the sensible filmmakers in Tamil cinema.

The 90-minute film tracks the bond between impoverished, hard-working civic worker Salamma and an 80 plus rag-picker Ammani.

6. Uriyadi

Directional debut of Vijay Kumar, Uriyadi is a political thriller set in the late 1990s', revolving around the engineering colleges of Tamilnadu

5. Kutrame Thandanai

Manikandan is one of those rare Tamil film-makers who can get across socially relevant issues in the most interesting manner.

Aandavan Kattali earlier in this list was also directed by Manikandan.

Kutrame Thandanai speaks the story of a young man with a visual impairment uses his other heightened senses to unravel a murder mystery.

4. Iraivi

Karthik Subbaraj, who surprised Tamil audience by his first two movies PIZZA and JIGARTHANDA, speaks about Men-Woman relationship and their priorities.

The movie is about women's freedom, how men look at it and how women use it.The film is based on the women we see around us and how certain things stay the same, no matter what class or background they belong to.

3. Joker

Raju Murugan's Joker is not a great film, but it is a necessary film; one that shows complexities of a reality without resorting to vigilante style justice.

2. Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru

Directed by teenager Karthick Naren, D16 is a crime thriller as Rehman in the lead role.

Deepak(Rehman) retires after an accident. Five years down the line, he is forced to revisit all the events leading to the accident.


The jewel in the crown in this year is Vetrimaaran's Visaranai being chosen as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. Produced by Dhanush, the docudrama-crime thriller was the first Tamil film to represent India at the Academy Awards in 15 years.
